How Do You Measure Inseam? Every Method Shares One Step, Then Splits
To measure an inseam, stand barefoot with the back against a wall, press a hardcover book upward between the legs until it sits level and firm against the crotch, mark the wall at the book's top edge, and measure from that mark down to the floor. That figure is a body inseam. A garment inseam is a different number, taken along the inside seam of finished trousers from the crotch seam to the hem, and the two are not interchangeable. In the US Army's ANSUR II survey, the equivalent body dimension, crotch height, averaged 84.59 cm (33.30 in) across 4,082 men and 78.23 cm (30.80 in) across 1,986 women.
The one step every inseam method shares
Every published procedure starts the same way, by locating a crotch reference. After that they part company on the tool, the pressure applied, the stance, and the endpoint.
Trek carries both versions on its own website. Its bike sizing guide tells riders to stand barefoot against a wall, tuck a ruler between the legs, pull it up into the crotch as if sitting on the saddle, and measure from the ruler's top edge to the ground. Trek's clothing guide defines the same word differently: "Inseam refers to the length of the garment, from the crotch seam to the hem."
One manufacturer, one word, two dimensions. Carry either definition into the other's task and the result is a plausible-looking figure that is quietly wrong, because the two measurements begin and end in different places.
Why estimating inseam from height does not work
The most common shortcut is a height-to-inseam table. It fails on the data.
The 2012 Anthropometric Survey of U.S. Army Personnel (ANSUR II), reported by Claire C. Gordon and colleagues at the US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center as NATICK/TR-15/007, released its working databases publicly: 4,082 men and 1,986 women, each measured on 93 dimensions. Correlating stature against crotch height in those files gives r = 0.86 for men and r = 0.85 for women. Height therefore accounts for roughly 74% of the variation in male leg length and 72% in female. About a quarter of it is something else.
That residual is not academic. Among the 205 ANSUR II men measuring 175 to 176 cm tall, roughly 5 ft 9 in, crotch height ran from 78.9 to 91.9 cm, a spread of 13.0 cm or 5.1 inches. Keep only the middle 90% of that group and the range is still 81.0 to 88.3 cm, a spread of 2.9 inches. Two men of identical height, both inside the normal range, can be three trouser lengths apart.
The ratio itself moves. Across the male sample, crotch height divided by stature had a median of 0.481, with individual values from 0.435 to 0.532. A calculator multiplying height by one constant picks a single point on it.
Body inseam and garment inseam are different dimensions
Three quantities travel under the same word, and keeping them apart is most of the work.

Uniqlo states the boundary plainly: "When selecting a size, please refer to the Body Size Chart. The Product Size Chart shows the measurements of the finished garment and should not be compared directly with your body measurements."
How to measure your body inseam
ISO 8559-1:2017, the international standard for anthropometric definitions in clothing, lists an anthropometer, calipers and an inclinometer among the equipment. Nobody has that at home. The substitute is a hardcover book for the anthropometer's horizontal arm, a wall to keep it square, and a rigid tape for the vertical.
- Undress to underwear or close-fitting shorts. Denim adds fabric thickness at exactly the reference point. Cyclists who ride in a chamois should measure in it and note that on the figure.
- Stand barefoot, heels together, shoulders against a wall, looking straight ahead. ANSUR II's protocol specifies that the participant "stands erect, looking straight ahead. The heels are together, and the weight is distributed equally on both feet."
- Raise a hardcover book, spine up, flat against the wall and perpendicular to it, until it is snug against the crotch. Paperbacks and towels compress and read short.
- Check the book is level with a spirit level or phone app before marking. A five-degree tilt across a 25 cm book throws the front edge over a centimetre out of position.
- Mark the wall at the book's top edge and measure from the mark to the floor. For a median man that mark lands near 84.5 cm (33.27 in); for a median woman, near 78.0 cm (30.71 in).
- Repeat three times and average. The reason sits in the survey's own error data.
ANSUR II tested its own measurers. Table 28 of the Gordon report records that trained anthropometrists using a proper anthropometer disagreed with each other by an average of 6.2 mm on male crotch height and 5.8 mm on female, against an allowable error of 10 mm. On stature they disagreed by 3.1 mm and 2.8 mm. The report names the reason: crotch height "involves subjective judgment about the amount of pressure used." Anyone working at home with a book should expect at least that much scatter, which is why three attempts beat one.
The stance width nobody agrees on
The sources contradict each other on stance width, and the difference is measurable.
ANSUR II measures with the heels together. Robbie Ferri, a qualified bike fitter writing as senior bike maintenance writer at BikeTips, tells readers to stand with "your feet shoulder-width apart and flat on the floor." Trek's guide does not specify a stance width. Fit calculators in the Competitive Cyclist mould nominate about 15 cm.
Treat each leg as a straight line from crotch point to foot and the arithmetic follows. On an 84.5 cm leg, moving the feet 15 cm apart lowers the crotch point by about 3 mm; at 40 cm apart, roughly shoulder width, the drop is about 2.4 cm, nearly a full inch. That is enough to move a rider between frame sizes, so the stance should be recorded with the number and repeated on any re-check.
How to measure the inseam of trousers you already own
This is a garment measurement and the body never enters it. Uniqlo's instruction is standard: "Measure the inseam of a pair of pants you have by starting from the stitches at the crotch down to the cuff along the inside stitches of the pants." Mavi Jeans gives the same method for denim. Lay them flat, smooth the leg without stretching, and start the tape where the front and back rises meet.
Two things distort the result. Rise is the first. Todd Shelton, founder of the American menswear company of the same name, notes that "depending on the rise, your proper hem length can vary one or more inches," because a higher waistband sits the crotch seam higher and a lower one drops it. Hem allowance is the second. Robert Eames, writing for the denim publication Heddels, puts a finished jeans hem at under half an inch of turned fabric and notes that raw denim is routinely sold with inseams of 35 to 38 inches, expecting the buyer to hem it. Shelton adds that tailors "will leave a two to three inch outlet on the hem, so you will always have plenty of fabric to let out if necessary."
Where the measurement ends: floor, ankle bone, or hem
The endpoint is where most conflicting answers come from, and it depends on the purpose.
Mavi's guidance defines an inseam as "the distance between the crotch and the end of the leg opening," then tells shoppers measuring on the body to "calculate the length between just below your crotch and the bottom of your ankle." Its garment method ends at the hem; Trek's bike guide and ANSUR II end at the floor. ANSUR II puts the outer ankle bone at a mean 7.29 cm above the floor for men and 6.27 cm for women, the size of the gap between those endpoints.
Bicycle fitting needs the floor-referenced figure, because standover clearance is measured from the ground. Trouser length needs the hem position, a style decision rather than an anatomical fact, and Shelton puts the sensitivity plainly: "hemming just a half inch can make the difference in your pants fitting adequately or great."
Turning an inseam into a trouser size
A body inseam does not specify a finished garment length, and treating it as one is what fills the returns queue. The National Retail Federation, in its 2025 Retail Returns Landscape with Happy Returns, a UPS company, projects $849.9 billion in industry returns for 2025 and estimates 19.3% of online sales will come back.
Three things sit between the body number and the label. Rise moves the crotch seam up or down. Intended break decides how much fabric stacks on the shoe. Brand grading means one company's 32 is not another's. Manufacturers add tolerance on top: Uniqlo warns that "a measurement variation of approximately 1-2 cm (or 1-3 cm for belts) may occur" between nominally identical garments.
The practical route is to measure a pair that already fits and let hem allowance absorb the remainder. Shelton's advice for the fitting: wear the waistband where it will actually sit, and "bring the shoes you are most likely to wear with the pants."
Turning an inseam into a bike size
Here the body figure does the work directly. Trek's recommended road sizes, as published by the retailer Scheels, assign a 52 frame to inseams of 76–79 cm, a 54 to 78–82 cm, a 56 to 81–85 cm and a 58 to 84–87 cm. The bands overlap: an 81 cm inseam sits inside both the 54's and the 56's, and the chart does not break the tie.
Standover clearance does. Trek's published geometry for the 2025 Domane SL Gen 4 lists standover at 754 mm for the 54 and 776 mm for the 56, a 2.2 cm step. An 81 cm barefoot inseam clears the 54's top tube by 5.6 cm and the 56's by 3.4 cm. Across the chart, a rider at the bottom of each Trek inseam band clears the top tube by 2.5 to 2.6 cm barefoot, before shoes are added.
For saddle height, the multiplier published in Greg LeMond's Complete Book of Bicycling and credited to his coach Cyrille Guimard is inseam × 0.883, from the bottom bracket centre to the top of the saddle; LeMond recommends subtracting 3 mm for clipless pedals. The companion frame formula is inseam in cm × 0.667.
Not everyone in the trade accepts the number's primacy. Bastian Marks, a physiotherapist and bike fitter interviewed by GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine, is blunt: "Inseam and arm lengths aren't useful to me." Saddle height is trivially adjustable, he argues, while frame length is not. "Height, strange as it sounds, tells me more than leg length." He warns that asking for leg length produces oversized bikes, because "many people have long legs and a short torso."
Trek's own caveat points the same way. Its chart, Scheels notes, shows recommended sizes based on height, but "there are some other factors, like arm and leg length, that determine a great fit."
When the charts disagree
ISO 8559-1:2017 hints at why the subject is so slippery. Its contents list places "inside leg height" at clause 5.1.15 among vertical measurements, "outside leg length" at 5.4.22 among contour lengths traced along the body surface, and "inside leg length" at 5.7.6 among calculated measurements. What shoppers call one thing, the standard treats as several quantities derived in different ways.
When two charts disagree, establish which quantity each reports. A chart with "inseam" beside "waist" and "hip" wants body measurements. A chart with "inseam" beside "leg opening" and "rise" reports finished garments. Record the procedure with the number: barefoot or shod, heels together or apart, floor or hem, and the date. A figure without its method cannot be compared to anything, which is how one measurement session produces two contradictory sizes and one avoidable return.
